Identifying cult-like characteristics
To understand the necessity of these changes, it's important to recognize certain characteristics that differentiate cult-like organizations from authentic Christian ministries:
1. Concentrated Leadership Without Term Limits
The organization has been directed for years by a small group of individuals who operate without any term limits. This concentration of power fosters an environment resistant to new ideas and discourages broader participation in leadership roles.
2. Absence of Due Process in Conflict Resolution
The organization lacks a formal process for addressing conflicts. Members are often faced with an ultimatum: align with the leadership's decisions or face expulsion. This approach has led to the abrupt removal of loyal leaders, some with over a decade of loyal service, without fair hearings or opportunities for reconciliation.
3. Spiritual Abuse and Marginalization
Leadership has been reported to exercise spiritual abuse by ostracizing members, denying them due process, and marginalizing individuals based on subjective judgments and personal biases. Such actions undermine the spiritual well-being of members and contradict the principles of Christian fellowship.
4. Lack of External Oversight and Accountability
There is no oversight committee or spiritual guidance from ordained ministers or pastors to provide governance and accountability. This absence of external oversight allows unchecked authority, increasing the risk of misuse of power and deviation from the organization's original mission.
These characteristics have contributed to the organization's shift from a Christ-centered ministry to an entity exhibiting cult-like behaviors. Implementing the proposed conditions is essential to realign the organization with its foundational Christian values and ensure a healthy, accountable, and spiritually enriching environment for all members.

1. Lack of Due Process
Current State
Edge Venture Ministries currently does not have a fair process for members to voice concerns or contest decisions. This absence leaves members feeling unheard and powerless, creating a climate where decisions are made unilaterally, fostering a cult-like dynamic.
Potential Enhancement
Edge Venture Ministries lacks a fair and standard process for members to voice concerns or contest decisions. This absence fosters a cult-like dynamic by concentrating power in the hands of a few and silencing dissent. Due process ensures fairness, accountability, and trust within the organization.

“Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy.” — Proverbs 31:9
2. Lack of Effective
Conflict Resolution
Current State
Edge Venture Ministries currently does not have effective systems to address conflicts. Issues are either avoided or addressed inconsistently, leading to unresolved tensions, mistrust, and a control-based environment where dissent is silenced.
Potential Enhancement
There are no clear standards or procedures for resolving disputes, which leads to unresolved tensions, mistrust, and division. Conflict resolution systems are essential for promoting reconciliation and maintaining a healthy, unified community

“If your brother or sister sins, go and point out their fault, just between the two of you. If they listen to you, you have won them over.” — Matthew 18:15
3. No Oversight Committee
Current State
Edge Venture Ministries currently does not have an independent oversight committee, leaving leadership decisions unchecked. This lack of accountability allows for a concentration of power, contributing to a cult-like governance structure.
Potential Enhancement
Edge Venture’s current lack of an independent oversight committee leaves leadership unchecked, enabling an environment devoid of transparency, accountability, and integrity. This glaring absence perpetuates the authoritarian, cult-like atmosphere that undermines the ministry’s mission. Without immediate action to establish such a committee, the cycle of unchecked power and insular decision-making will continue, jeopardizing the very foundation of Edge Venture and its future as a Christ-centered ministry.

“Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed.” — Proverbs 15:22"
4. Board Member Framework
Current State:
Edge Venture Ministries currently does not have a clear structure for selecting board members, nor does it enforce term limits. This creates a “good old boy” network that excludes diversity and fresh perspectives, further fostering a cult-like atmosphere.
Potential Enhancement
There is no clear structure for selecting board members, nor are there reasonable term limits, resulting in a “good old boy” “cult-like” network that stifles innovation and diversity. A structured framework would ensure accountability and fresh perspectives.

“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind...” — Romans 12:2
5. Recent Bylaw Changes
Current State:
Edge Venture Ministries recently made bylaw changes that failed to address critical gaps in governance. This leaves the organization vulnerable to misuse of authority and reinforces a cult-like hierarchy.
Potential Enhancement
Recent changes to the bylaws failed to address critical governance gaps, leaving the organization vulnerable to misuse of authority. Updating the bylaws with clear policies on accountability and transparency is essential for fostering trust.

“If the foundations are destroyed, what can the righteous do?” — Psalm 11:3
6. Lack of Standard Curriculum
Current State:
Edge Venture Ministries currently does not provide an ongoing curriculum for men’s personal, emotional, and spiritual development. Many members feel marginalized and unsupported, which can lead to disengagement or perceptions of favoritism.
Potential Enhancement
Edge Venture does not offer an ongoing curriculum for men’s personal, emotional, and spiritual development. Many members feel marginalized and unsupported, hindering their growth and engagement.

“Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old, he will not depart from it.” — Proverbs 22:6
7. No Specific Term Limits
Current State:
Edge Venture Ministries currently does not enforce term limits for leadership positions, leading to stagnation and a lack of accountability. This contributes to a closed and insular leadership structure resembling a cult-like atmosphere.
Potential Enhancement
Leadership positions lack defined reasonable term limits, allowing for stagnation and entrenchment. Term limits encourage fresh ideas, accountability, and a more dynamic leadership structure.

“To everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven.” — Ecclesiastes 3:1
8. Integrity Concerns
Current State:
Edge Venture Ministries has demonstrated a lack of integrity in decision-making processes, leading to mistrust and perceptions of unfairness. This damages credibility and fosters a controlling environment.
Potential Enhancement
Edge Venture’s decision-making processes have been marred by a profound lack of integrity, breeding mistrust and reinforcing perceptions of favoritism. Integrity is not optional—it is the cornerstone of any ministry claiming to reflect Christ-centered values. The unresolved and unjust firing of Keith Gudeman, which has lingered since July of last year, is a glaring example of this failure. The current board’s approach—marked by delay, deflection, and dismissal—signals a troubling unwillingness to address these concerns honestly and transparently. Without immediate action to restore integrity, the ministry risks further alienation from its mission and those it seeks to serve.

“The integrity of the upright guides them, but the crookedness of the treacherous destroys them.” — Proverbs 11:3
9. Loss of Ministry Identity
Current State:
Edge Venture Ministries currently does not operate as a true ministry but functions more like a controlling cult, focusing on power and authority rather than community and discipleship.
Potential Enhancement
Edge Venture has shifted from being a Christ-centered ministry to functioning more like a controlling cult, prioritizing power over community and discipleship. Returning to its roots is vital for restoring credibility and purpose.

“You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again?” — Matthew 5:13
10. Standards and Procedures for Conflict Resolution
Current State:
Edge Venture Ministries currently does not have standards or procedures for conflict resolution. This omission leads to unresolved disputes and a culture of avoidance or control.
Potential Enhancement
Conflict is an inevitable part of human interaction, even within a Christ-centered ministry. Jesus told His apostles, “I did not come to abolish the law, but to fulfill it.” In fulfillment, no brother is left behind. Yet, Edge Venture’s failure to establish formal conflict resolution standards has left disputes unresolved and created an environment of control and avoidance. Without a clear and equitable system for addressing disagreements, mistrust and division will persist. Establishing robust conflict resolution procedures would not only reflect Christ’s teachings but also ensure that every brother is valued, heard, and reconciled—leaving no one behind. This principle must become the foundation for unity and growth within the ministry.

“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.” — Matthew 5:9
11. Philosophy of
“No Man Left Behind”
Current State:
Edge Venture Ministries currently does not prioritize a “No Man Left Behind” philosophy, focusing instead on control and power. This leaves some members feeling excluded and undervalued.
Potential Enhancement
Edge Venture does not prioritize inclusivity or actively ensure that every member feels supported. This philosophy would ensure all members are valued and foster a healthier, more inclusive community.

“What do you think? If a man owns a hundred sheep, and one of them wanders away, will he not leave the ninety-nine on the hills and go to look for the one that wandered off?” — Matthew 18:12
12. Reconciliation
Current State:
Edge Venture Ministries does not actively promote reconciliation, leaving many unresolved disputes and alienating members.
Potential Enhancement
The ministry does not actively promote reconciliation as a core value. This oversight alienates members and leaves disputes unresolved. Fostering reconciliation would align the ministry with biblical principles of forgiveness and restoration.

“All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation.” — 2 Corinthians 5:18
13. Addition of Board Members
Current State:
Edge Venture Ministries currently operates with only three board members, down from five in previous years. This limited structure reinforces a “good old boy” dynamic and hinders accountability.
Potential Enhancement
The board has been reduced to three members from its previous five, creating a closed, insular governance structure. Expanding the board with qualified board members to at least five to seven members would ensure broader representation and accountability.

“For lack of guidance a nation falls, but victory is won through many advisers.” — Proverbs 11:14
14. Lack of Licensed Mental Health Professionals
Current State:
Edge Venture Ministries does not have licensed mental health professionals on site during experiential and psychodrama work. This creates an unsafe environment and risks violating state laws on unlicensed counseling practices.
Potential Enhancement
Edge Venture’s failure to obtain licensed mental health professionals to oversee its experiential and psychodrama procedures puts participants at significant risk. Without professional oversight, these processes lack safeguards, endangering their physical, cognitive, emotional, and spiritual well-being. Additionally, the registration process must include a qualified mental health professional to assess and approve each participant’s readiness for such intense experiences. This oversight is critical to ensure the safety of every individual and maintain the integrity of the ministry.

“The prudent see danger and take refuge, but the simple keep going and pay the penalty.” — Proverbs 27:12
15. Board Member Education
Current State:
Edge Venture Ministries does not require board members to receive formal training on nonprofit governance. This lack of education contributes to mismanagement and a cult- like concentration of power.
Potential Enhancement
The ministry has demonstrated a lack of integrity in its decision-making processes, which has led to mistrust and perceptions of favoritism. Integrity is essential for aligning the organization with Christ-centered values, and it requires that we consistently do what we say we will do. Accountability is a daily commitment to remain aligned with Christ, ensuring that our actions reflect our beliefs and the mission of the ministry. Board members must be educated on the importance of integrity in every decision, as this trustworthiness not only strengthens the organization but also honors the foundation of faith on which it was built. Without a strong commitment to integrity, the ministry’s credibility and ability to fulfill its mission will continue to be compromised.

“Let the wise hear and increase in learning, and the one who understands obtain guidance.” — Proverbs 1:5
16. Lack of Transparency
Current State:
Edge Venture's failure to share board minutes or summaries undermines accountability and trust, fostering an environment of secrecy and misalignment with its mission.
Potential Enhancement
Edge Venture’s failure to share board minutes or summaries undermines accountability and trust. Transparency is crucial for ensuring decisions align with Christ-centered values and for building confidence among participants and supporters. Without it, the ministry risks fostering an environment of secrecy, where decisions are made without proper oversight, leading to distrust and misalignment with the mission. Openness in decision-making is essential for maintaining integrity and building a strong, accountable community.

“Let the wise hear and increase in learning, and the one who understands obtain guidance.” — Proverbs 1:5
17. Lack of Financial Accountability
and Transparency
Current State:
Edge Venture Ministries does not require board members to receive formal training on nonprofit governance. This lack of education contributes to mismanagement and a cult- like concentration of power.
Potential Enhancement
To enhance financial integrity, Edge Venture is to adopt third-party accreditation standards such as the Evangelical Council for Financial Accountability (ECFA) and Excellence in Giving to ensure ethical financial practices. Implementing comprehensive audits, publishing regular financial reports, and employing a certified financial officer will demonstrate transparency and accountability, fostering donor confidence and supporting the ministry's growth. Prioritizing these reforms will help Edge Venture fulfill its mission as a Christ-centered ministry.

“Let the wise hear and increase in learning, and the one who understands obtain guidance.” — Proverbs 1:5

OUR VALUES

Four Major Concerns
To address the concerns regarding the organization's transformation from a Christ-centered ministry to a cult-like entity, the following conditions are proposed:
1. Leadership Resignation
The current leadership, responsible for the shift away from the organization's foundational Christian principles, must resign from their positions immediately. This step is essential to facilitate the appointment of new leaders who embody integrity, transparency, and a renewed commitment to the organization's original mission.
2. Board Restructuring
The governing board requires comprehensive restructuring. This involves appointing five to seven new members with appropriate qualifications and establishing defined term limits. Such changes will ensure diverse perspectives, enhance accountability, and realign the board with the organization's Christ-centered mission.
3. Bylaw Revisions
Immediate amendments to the organization's bylaws are necessary. These revisions should focus on enhancing governance, transparency, and accountability, thereby establishing a more secure and ethical foundation for the organization's operations
4. Prompt Implementation
All the above changes must be implemented without delay. These conditions are non-negotiable actions essential to securing the organization's future and restoring its alignment with Christ's teachings and its mission to faithfully serve the community.
We trust in the commitment to meet these conditions and believe that, together, we can transition the organization from its current state and rebuild it into a ministry characterized by trust, accountability, and spiritual growth.
